For the environment for the sake of
Climate protection

Tree planting project 2020 in cooperation with Plant for the Planet
We are highly committed to sustainably improving our environmental footprint. To this end, we regularly take a close look at our greenhouse gas emissions in order to identify opportunities to further reduce them.
A comprehensive energy management system in accordance with ISO 50001 was introduced for the candy factory’s production plants (Sweet Tec and Toffee Tec) in 2015. A significant step towards making a financial contribution to climate protection is the switch to green electricity at Toffee Tec, which we have been using since 2016. The conservation of natural resources and the reduction in the use of energy are also taken into account during modernization as well as in new processes and new investments.
A series of reduction measures (combined heat and power plant, heat recovery refrigeration system, wastewater pre-treatment, optimization of compressed air control, conversion of lighting to LED, etc.) have already led to significant savings over the past few years. In 2020, the measurement technology and monitoring system were further expanded in order to better identify further optimization potential. The system for collecting and evaluating data was further improved in 2021. Significant projects to increase energy efficiency included optimizing the running time of the combined heat and power plant and increasing the use of sewage gas from the wastewater pre-treatment plant.

SINCE 2022
In addition to avoiding and reducing greenhouse gases, offsetting remaining emissions is an important step in comprehensive climate protection. For the first time in 2022, we were able to make a financial contribution to climate protection in collaboration with ClimatePartner by financing climate protection projects for the Toffee Tec plant at the Boizenburg site in order to offset the remaining emissions. As part of this project, communities in the Kono region in Sierra Leone/Africa and, since 2023, in Malawi/Africa have been supported in restoring drinking water wells. Many families have no other option than to boil water over an open fire using the simplest of means. This results in CO2 emissions and, depending on the region, ever larger areas are being deforested. The projects provide access to clean drinking water, eliminating the need to boil water over an open fire and thus reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
We are continuously working on implementing additional reduction measures in order to gradually support our production sites financially through climate protection projects and thus make a contribution to climate protection.

Plastic reduction
Since its foundation, the candy factory has also tried to conserve resources in terms of packaging and transportation. From the very beginning, we have relied on reusable systems for the procurement of raw materials. The largest quantities of raw materials, such as sugar, glucose or juice concentrates etc., are therefore delivered in silo vehicles and reusable containers wherever possible.
We want to offer our customers safe and high-quality products. Of course, packaging plays a very important role here, as it prevents the sweets from being damaged by moisture penetration, for example, so we are not yet able to completely dispense with plastic packaging. In order to reduce the environmental impact of plastic to a minimum, we have been working for a long time to avoid wasting materials and are working with Purchasing and Quality Assurance to make the films as thin as possible, among other things. At the same time, the processability of the packaging materials on our machines must be ensured in order to prevent additional waste from being generated during production. We carry out various tests and investigations at regular intervals to check the different alternatives and thus come very close to the optimum. We are proud of the fact that we have reduced our films by up to 33%, depending on the item.

Animal welfare
In our responsibility for animals, we want to protect their lives and well-being as best we can.
Based on the obvious recipe, many of our sweets have always been made entirely without animal ingredients – in other words, they are vegan.
In 2020, we also launched the first items in the fruit gum product category – which is traditionally made with gelatine – with the V-Label ‘vegetarian’ marking. Since 2021, there has also been a whole range of vegan fruit gums in our assortment, which is constantly growing.
Protecting biodiversity

A wildflower meadow is certainly wonderful to look at, but more importantly, it can be a valuable biotope for a wide variety of animal and plant species. In particular, small animals and insects such as butterflies, wild bees and bumblebees find a home here.
Why is this so important?
Then as now, bees play a crucial role in our ecosystems. Did you know that in Europe around 150 crops and 80% of native wild plants depend on insect pollination?* A third of everything we eat depends on bee pollination. Strawberries, blueberries, pears, apples, but also cherries and peaches depend on pollination by bees. Depending on the species, vegetables are only pollinated by bees: cucumbers, pumpkins, peas and beans. But birds are also dependent on bees. Only when plants are pollinated are there enough seeds and berries for birds to feed on. Our beloved honey could also run out. Wild and honey bees play a key role in preserving biodiversity, which is why their decline has become an alarming environmental issue in recent years. The World Biodiversity Council sees a threat to humanity’s food security.
We would like to do our bit to counteract this. Fortunately, we have a very large green area on our company premises. We have established over 2500 square meters of this as a wildflower meadow. First, small trees were planted and in fall 2019 and spring 2020 we started sowing special perennial seeds for wildflowers. This special seed is a colorful flowering mixture with low and tall-growing species. And our meadow is slowly turning into a bee paradise.
